“We’re Goin’ Back (Oh yeah!)” an 80s-themed Promare zine

This is a zine that departs from the traditional anthology format. We are prioritizing copy/content writers with a penchant for meta, creative nonfiction writers, accessory makers, graphic designers, movie and music critics, t-shirt designers, etc. along with the usual visual artist line-up. Because this is a highly conceptual project, a lot of collaboration and sacrifice of creative freedom will be necessary; however, I believe the rewards will be immense in that the zine will have an incredible cohesiveness never before seen in this fandom.

Harmonious concepts are the most important aspect of the project. For example: an advertisement for Promare-themed jewelry (which is designed by a jewelry maker) may need an illustrator to draw a character in said accessory, and then copywriters and graphic designers may need to work together to format and create the advertisement for the product that is available in the material world. We aim to break boundaries with fanzines and redefine what it means to be transformative.

We LOVE parodies and jokes. Please show us your sense of humor!  I will fight to bring your bonkers ideas to fruition just for my amusement alone.

This project is meant for a grassroots organization based in the city I live in (@BQIC_Ohio). A frustration I often have with “zinethologies''distributed in fandom is the emphasis on donating to non-profits. With your involvement, you will have a direct impact on the Black LGBT+ community in Columbus, OH.

The only people who could profit off this work are our Black contributors; if you are Black and in this zine, you deserve to benefit from it. I can’t say for sure yet if half-profit, half-nonprofit is doable, but I hope we can make it so!

This project will be fairly involved and requires hard work, but I think this is an incredible resume builder—instead of saying “I contributed an illustration and called it a day,” you can say “I worked directly with another creative in a completely different field and we materialized a tangible product.” I would gladly write your recommendation letter or be a reference on your resume. I am in an editing program and plan to be in the publishing industry. I will attest for you.

Thank you for your consideration for this project! I have been sitting on it for months and wish to see creatives of all kinds in this fandom make a difference!

Fern, Editor-In-Chief
